The internal and external teeth can be processed with special short-tooth type hob or gear shaper cutter. In single piece and small batch production, the standard hob can also be processed with left and right cutting method. First, the hob is cut radially to the full tooth depth specified by the gear, and then according to the measured tooth thickness margin, the hob is fed with the same amount of left and right tangential cutting respectively, and the tooth thickness required by the drawing is met.

Although this method can be used in general gear manufacturers, the operation is complicated and the efficiency is low, and it is easy to cause tooth profile error and affect the tooth profile accuracy, so it is not an ideal processing method. When the drum coupling adopts a special short thick tooth type, due to the appropriate increase in the thickness of the outer gear tooth, the bending strength of the inner and outer gear teeth is close, the bearing capacity is improved, the service life is extended, and the processing ability is good.

Because the inner teeth of this type of drum coupling have a certain tangential displacement, the tooth thickness is relatively thin. The internal tooth machining can be carried out by the channeling cutter tangential cutting method. In order to ensure that the internal and external gears have good stability when running, most of the top circle of the external teeth and the root circle of the internal teeth are the centering datum.

The general machining method of the internal teeth is to use the ordinary gear shaper cutter with standard teeth, and use the radial cutting method to cut to the full depth of the teeth and ensure the tolerance requirements of the root circle. The tooth thickness is still greater than the size requirements need to be further inserted, but the root circle size has reached the required value, so it can not be fed again, then the workpiece should be relatively more than a certain Angle when the insert knife does not rotate, and then continue to insert.
